When a workpiece is fixed between the headstock and the tailstock in a lathe it is said to be "between centers". This makes it more stable, and more force may be applied to the workpiece, via tools, at a right angle to the axis of rotation, without fear that the workpiece may break loose.
Several years ago, we had difficulty finding high quality solid centers at reasonable prices to use on our lathes and grinders, so we decided to manufacture our own. We had several customers who shared the same concerns. A "few" dead centers soon grew into an entire line of standard solid centers we simply call Stark Centers. Through word of mouth, some strategically placed ads and a network of distributors, Stark Industrial soon became one of the largest manufacturers of solid centers in the United States.
